The various Disciplines or Styles of yoga we incorporate into our teaching at Edge Yoga primarily include:

(1) Sri Swami Satchidananda described Integral Yoga as: "...a flexible combination of specific methods to develop every aspect of the individual: physical, intellectual, and spiritual. It is a scientific system which integrates the various branches of Yoga in order to bring about a complete and harmonious development of the individual."

(2) Vinyasa, or the flow of breath with movement is a vigorous style that focuses on strength and grace trough control. Flow yoga stems from Ashtanga Yoga, which means 'eight-limbed'. Vinyasa classes are a series of flowing postures linked by the breath to detoxify, strengthen the body, & nurture life force.

How to understand the levels described in our class schedule

(the descriptions appear in the order of general difficulty & represents a standard progression)

Yoga I
Our level one classes are appropriate for most ages, body types, & experience levels. In our level one classes our instruction focuses on body alignment & development of strength and body awareness within each student. These classes can be moderately challenging even for an advanced practitioner.

Mixed Level Yoga
Are appropriate for most practitioners but assume the student has had some exposure to hatha yoga. The instructors will provide a series of asana modifications allowing even the most advanced practitioner a challenge. These classes are still moderately difficult and are physically challenging.

Mixed Level Yoga I/II
Yoga I/II classes are faster paced and assume a deeper understanding of the foundational asana. In our I/II classes we begin to explore setting up more advanced asana including headstands and arm balances while developing the strength and body awareness to safely execute these more advanced asana.

"Power Yoga"
Our Power Yoga classes represent a mixture of different styles, but are similar in intensity to an intermediate Ashtanga class. These classes move quickly and are physically demanding. Our Power Yoga classes focus on developing the strength to perform asana execution in our Yoga II classes acting as a bridge between Yoga I and II. Students taking a "Power Yoga" class should either have an athletic background or have an understanding of body alignment in hatha yoga postures and heightened body awareness & strength. Some prior yoga experience is required.

Level 2 / Yoga II
Our level two classes assume the student has a foundational understanding of basic asana & asana modification. In our level two classes the instructors work with the students to develop execution & alignment in advanced postures & flows involving a variety of inversions and arm balances. INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION SUGGESTED.
